The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the province has taken over the investigation of a crash in Napanee that resulted in a vehicle ending up in Lake Ontario.

As per a news release, the incident occurred on April 21 just before 11 p. m.

An officer from the Lennox and Addington detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police tried to pull over a vehicle on Bath Road. Shortly afterward, the vehicle went into the ditch and then into Lake Ontario, where it sank.

The number of people inside the vehicle is currently unknown. Multiple emergency teams, including the Prince Edward County OPP Marine Unit, OPP Aviation Services, OPP East Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team, OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre have been sent out to search for any potential occupants.

Highway 33 is presently closed at County Road 21, west of Bath in Greater Napanee as investigators continue their work at the scene.

The SIU is an independent civilian law enforcement agency that carries out criminal investigations involving police and civilians when serious injury or death occurs or when there are allegations of sexual assault.
