Toronto fire crews sprayed down and worked to melt a huge formation of ice blocks set up by Drake to promote his upcoming album.

This action follows some Torontonians taking drastic measures, like starting fires on the ice or using sledgehammers to break it apart, in hopes of uncovering the release date for the rapper’s long-awaited “Iceman” album.

In light of public safety, Toronto Fire Services Chief Jim Jessop released a statement Tuesday evening announcing he was taking action under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act due to “dangerous and unsafe activities.”

“As Toronto’s fire chief, my top priority is keeping Torontonians safe,” he said. “Large numbers of individuals [had] gathered to attempt to melt the ice using flammable liquids and open flames in an uncontrolled environment which results in an immediate threat to life.”

The Toronto fire department wrapped up its operations Wednesday evening, stating that “further work to remove the large ice blocks will be handled privately by the event organizers,” according to a city spokesperson who spoke with CBC Toronto via email. Prime Mobile Wash, an industrial cleaning company, confirmed in an email to CBC Toronto that they are now responsible for removing the ice blocks.

While firefighters’ efforts are appreciated, it’s “disappointing” to see the structure taken down sooner than expected, remarked Michael Gingerich, owner of Mawg Design, who collaborated with Drake’s team on the sculpture.

He mentioned they never anticipated such a large turnout from fans or that some people would show up with pickaxes and blowtorches during his interview on CBC Radio’s Metro Morning Wednesday.

“The intention was to make a statement. This is a big moment for Toronto.. for Drake.. and all the fans,” said Gingerich. “But it was great to see a great turnout; maybe a bit more than we anticipated.”

A fire unit along with an aerial truck responded around 11:30 p. m. Tuesday following requests from police and had been spraying warm water on the blocks throughout the night, Capt. Alex Vashkevich told Wednesday morning.

Photos captured crowds still gathering outside barricades around 12:49 a. m., as crews continued dousing the structure while water flooded nearby roads.

The sculpture stood at 16 blocks high on Tuesday but remained partially intact as one side slowly melted while crews continued hosing it down Wednesday morning.

On Monday, Drake posted images of the icy installation along with coordinates for its location captioned: “Release date inside.”

A streamer known as Kishka seemingly uncovered a blue folder hidden within one of the ice blocks Tuesday afternoon that revealed when the album is set to drop-May 15-which Drake later confirmed via social media Tuesday evening.

The sculpture consisted of thousands of ice blocks sourced from Hensall, Ontario, according to Michael Gingerich from Mawg Designs who partnered with Drake’s team for this installation. (Evan Mitsui/CBC)

No plans to recover costs for enforcement or melting: Chow

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her support for Jessop’s decision but also understands why fans became so excited about this event.

“Drake is a big supporter of our city and there’s so much excitement across our city towards this new Drake album,” she stated at an unrelated news conference. “It is our responsibility to make sure people are safe.”

No plans currently exist regarding recovering costs associated with police enforcement or melting efforts, she added.

However, Chow mentioned that city officials will follow up with police and Jessop and also plan “to chat” with Drake.

A City of Toronto spokesperson Russell Baker informed CBC Toronto that permission wasn’t needed from city officials for setting up those large ice blocks in that parking lot since it was private property.

However, he noted complaints arose concerning public safety related directly to those large ice blocks.

“The fire safety complaints received were about individuals starting fires using open flames and flammable liquids; there were also reports noting several climbing onto and around slippery sections of this icy structure armed with pickaxes,” Baker explained further detailing concerns regarding public risk posed by these actions.

The city didn’t respond when asked how much recent events including police involvement along with melting initiatives have cost taxpayers overall.
