Five children lost their lives, and six others were injured in a two-vehicle crash in rural Ontario on Friday night.
The Ontario Provincial Police report that around 7:30 p. m. in Mapleton Township, northwest of Guelph, a van carrying 10 people collided with a sport utility vehicle with one occupant at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12.
According to investigators, five children – four girls and one boy – aged between 4 years and 12 years old were killed in the incident. All the victims were part of the same family, but police have not disclosed how they are related.
In addition to the fatalities, four adults and one infant suffered serious injuries, while the driver of the SUV also sustained significant injuries.
At least three individuals were airlifted to different trauma centers, while others were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
OPP Superintendent Dwight Thib expressed gratitude to the “good samaritans” who assisted first responders, noting that victims received “immediate care” at the scene.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared his condolences for “the families and loved ones of the children who were killed in the tragic collision that took place yesterday in Mapleton Township, and with those currently being cared for in hospital.”
“This heartbreaking loss is being felt across the community and the entire province,” he wrote in a social media post shared Saturday afternoon. “Let’s all stand together with those who are grieving during this terrible time.”
