This month, the City of Brampton is providing residents, builders, and landlords with direct access to city experts as part of its initiative to encourage safe construction practices at the beginning of the spring building season.

The program, in connection with Building Safety Month, features in-person “Meet the Experts” sessions at city hall on May 13 and 14. During these sessions, staff will offer assistance regarding permits, zoning, inspections, and requirements for rental housing.

City officials state that these sessions aim to support those planning various projects – from home renovations and decks to additional residential units – helping them navigate approval processes and steer clear of typical delays.

Staff will be available from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. in the atrium at Brampton City Hall without needing appointments.

The city emphasizes that early engagement can help minimize expensive corrections and ensure projects comply with the Ontario Building Code’s minimum safety standards. Municipal building officials review plans and perform inspections at crucial stages during construction to verify compliance.

Officials caution that starting work without necessary permits can create safety issues, cause project delays, increase costs or lead to enforcement actions.

This outreach occurs as Brampton continues handling growth while updating its planning framework. Recent adjustments to the city’s comprehensive zoning bylaw include modified driveway width regulations aimed at enhancing safety and compatibility within neighborhoods.

The city also highlights its Residential Rental Licensing program requiring homeowners who rent out one to four units to secure an annual license free of charge. This program includes rules for registering additional residential units while ensuring adherence to zoning and building standards.

Municipal officials stress that building safety is a collective responsibility that protects homeowners, tenants, and workers while fostering well-maintained communities.

You can find more information on the city’s website or by attending the upcoming sessions.
