The Barrie Police Service is grieving the loss of Sgt. Brett Carleton, a dedicated investigator who has died.
His passing was shared on social media Thursday morning, but no details regarding the cause have been provided.
Sgt. Carleton joined Barrie Police in 2000 after starting his career with the Toronto Police Service that same year.
During his time with Barrie Police, Carleton served in multiple investigative units and was part of the Emergency Support Unit from 2003 to 2011 before becoming Sergeant of the Homicide and Major Crime Unit in 2023.

The service noted that Sgt. Carleton also played a key role in mentoring fellow officers as a Coach Officer, helping train new recruits.
“To us, he was more than a colleague – he was our friend,” Barrie Police Chief Rich Johnston said in a statement emailed to Barrie360.
“Sgt. Carleton will be remembered as a dedicated police officer who worked with many families over the years during some of the toughest moments of their lives, and he did it with such professionalism and commitment that we are proud to have worked alongside him.”
He led investigations into several high-profile cases, including the murder of April Dobson and an alleged double homicide at a Barrie encampment in summer 2025, as well as the disappearance of Indigenous woman Autumn Shaganash in 2023.
Sgt. Carleton’s contributions were acknowledged through multiple Formal Commendation Certificates. In 2017, he received recognition for going above and beyond normal work performance due to life-saving actions. In 2020, he earned commendations from both the Ontario government and City of Barrie for his investigative efforts.
