Two teams from King’s Town School are heading to Toronto this weekend to showcase their creativity and teamwork in a big provincial Minecraft tournament.

Both teams – The Pixelites and Terror Bytes – have made it through qualifying rounds for the Ontario Scholastic Esports Association (OSEA) Minecraft Provincial Championship happening Saturday at Humber Polytechnic.
The championship will see students in Grades 5 through 8 from all over Ontario come together for various collaborative building challenges using Minecraft Education. This program focuses on fostering creativity, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills.
Their teacher and esports coach Joshua Dickie mentioned that both teams worked hard over several months after school designing their projects.
“They were working on their builds that they submitted to the Ontario Scholastic Esports Association, and they were judged on all the projects they sent in,” Dickie said in an interview. “We recently heard back, and both teams qualified.”
The Pixelites – Oliver Armstrong, Ralph Bobrow and Harlo Garwood – along with Terror Bytes – Kieran Mc Cabe, Charlie Neary and Jackson Geen – will face off against another sixteen teams at this competition where they’ll tackle four timed build challenges.

Differing from typical esports competitions that rely heavily on quick reflexes or head-to-head gameplay battles; Minecraft events focus instead on open-ended design tasks. Participants receive materials along with a challenge prompt before being evaluated based on how effectively they realize their ideas within set time limits.
“It’s a sandbox-style game,” Dickie said. “It’s up to your imagination and creativity.”
This year’s qualifying task involved creating an Olympic-themed parkour course-a virtual obstacle run featuring jumps; checkpoints; along with intricate terrains requiring thoughtful design work beforehand submission according Dickie who stated students had considerable opportunities building testing then refining their designs before finalizing them
The provincial championship is part of a growing scholastic esports movement throughout Ontario spearheaded by OSEA-a non-profit organization led by educators focused upon connecting gaming experiences alongside curriculum-based learning objectives fostering essential skill development among young players alike.
