Toronto police have confirmed the identity of the second person found dead in separate burned vehicles across the city last week.
The remains of 32-year-old Marcus Charles were located inside a vehicle that had been set on fire in a hydro field near Reesor Road and Steeles Avenue East in Scarborough around 11 p. m. on September 21.
A few hours later, just before 1 a. m. on September 22, firefighters responded to a vehicle fire at James Gardens Park in Etobicoke. Once the flames were put out, they discovered a man’s body inside the car.
On Sunday, authorities identified this man as 30-year-old Mohamud Kheyre.
These incidents mark the 27th and 28th homicides reported this year.
Police have stated that both men suffered fatal gunshot wounds prior to their vehicles being discovered burned.
Investigators have not yet determined if there is any connection between the two cases or if the men knew each other.
“We are exploring all links, but we do believe they were targeted,” Det. Sgt. Henri Marsman said on Friday.
“The two incidents were about an hour-and-a-half apart. On its face, obviously you can make your own determinations,” he explained. “There are a lot of commonalities, but I have to rely on solid evidence to make that determination, and we are not at that stage yet.”
Marsman confirmed that the vehicle involved in the Etobicoke incident was a rental car, while the other burned vehicle found in Scarborough was reported stolen from within the GTA.
