Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) reported that police divers discovered a body inside a vehicle that had sunk in Lake Ontario Wednesday night following an attempted traffic stop.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been revealed, they stated.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), an officer attempted to pull over a driver on Bath Road in Loyalist Township, located west of Kingston, at approximately 10:55 p. m. on Tuesday.

Shortly afterward, the vehicle veered off into a ditch and subsequently sank in the lake.

Multiple police units and search-and-rescue teams from Canadian Forces Base Trenton participated in the search efforts, which led to the closure of the road on Wednesday. The OPP mentioned they were uncertain about how many individuals were in the vehicle when it went under.

The SIU indicated that they are looking into the OPP’s role since the crash occurred during an attempted traffic stop. Part of their responsibility is to investigate police involvement in incidents resulting in fatalities.

The accident took place near County Road 21, where it transitions into Highway 33. This route is also referred to as the Loyalist Parkway.
