An investigation has started following the death of a worker on Thursday at the Maple Leaf Foods facility in south London.
Emergency crews were called to the poultry processing plant located at 1577 Wilton Grove Rd. around 3 p. m.
Details about what took place are scarce, but London police mentioned in an emailed statement that they believe the death was accidental.
“The London Police Service is continuing the investigation in consultation with both the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ministry of Labour,” police said.
In a statement, the ministry confirmed it is looking into the matter and has assigned an inspector and an ergonomist to investigate further.
“On April 9, 2026, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development was notified of a workplace incident at Maple Leaf Foods involving a worker who sustained fatal injuries,” the ministry said.
“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time.”
A request for comment from Maple Leaf Foods was not immediately returned as of when this story was .
The 660,000-square-foot plant opened in 2022 and processes up to 100 million chickens each year.
