ST. THOMAS, ONT. – Element5 is digging in deeper in Ontario as the mass timber producer recently marked the grand opening of its $107 million plant expansion in St. Thomas.

This expansion more than doubles the facility’s size from 130,000 square feet to over 350,000 square feet. As a result, production capacity will rise from 50,000 cubic metres each year to 100,000 cubic metres per year of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glued-laminated timber (Glulam) products.

The company’s growth is supported by a strategic investment from its parent company, the HASSLACHER group, along with an $8 million contribution from the Government of Ontario through the Invest Ontario Fund to further enhance this project.

“This expansion represents a bold step forward for Element5, our partners and the mass timber industry in Canada,” said Chris Latour, president of Element5, in a statement. “We are proud to provide innovative, sustainable building solutions that help address Canada’s urgent need for affordable, climate-friendly housing and infrastructure. With our expanded operations, we are even better positioned to support communities across Ontario and North America.”

ELEMENT5 – The new facility will feature a glue-laminated and cross-laminated timber production line that will allow the company to increase the domestic supply of sustainable building materials while meeting growing demand for modular housing.

Founded in 2015, Element5 sources lumber from Ontario and specializes in designing, fabricating and assembling timber structures for commercial, industrial, residential and municipal projects. When the St. Thomas facility opened back in 2020 on a greenfield site with just 15 employees. Less than five years later, that number has risen to 175 skilled professionals according to their release. The backing from Invest Ontario will create an additional 150 jobs, bringing total employment at the company to over 325 people.
