York Region Public Health is looking into a measles outbreak in Vaughan and is alerting the public that some individuals may have come into contact with the virus.
A person who was contagious visited Becker’s Convenience Store in Vaughan on Tuesday from 2:45 p. m. to 5:15 p. m., according to a news release from the health authority.
Anyone present at that location during those hours might have been exposed to measles and should monitor for symptoms until September 23, it states.
If you think you were exposed, it’s recommended that you:
Confirm whether you’ve had two doses of the measles vaccine. Go to york. ca/measlesreporting to fill out a contact survey. If you’re pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or were with an infant under one year old, call the health authority right away for possible preventive treatment.
As of now, four cases are linked to this outbreak, according to the health authority.
Measles is an extremely contagious viral illness that spreads easily through the air. Symptoms include high fever, cough, red rash, and watery eyes.
The health authority advises everyone in the community to ensure they are fully vaccinated against measles and stay alert for symptoms.
It points out that infants, pregnant individuals, and those with compromised immune systems face a higher risk of serious complications like encephalitis or brain inflammation as well as death.
“Immunizations are one of the safest ways to protect you, your children and your community from serious and potentially deadly vaccine-preventable diseases,” said the YRPH.
