James ‘Jim’ Nelson Carnell passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 24th, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on May 26, 1945, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Jim was the loving son of the late Marjorie May (Mc Kiel) Cleveland.
Jim is fondly remembered by his caring wife of 52 years, Carol (Clarke), and by his son, James Heath Carnell. He will also be held dear by his brother, William Cleveland (Katherine Wallace), and his sister, Diane Elliot, along with several nieces, nephews, and a broad circle of extended family and friends.
In addition to his mother, Jim was predeceased by his brothers, Richard and Donald Cleveland.
An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Jim took great pleasure in hunting and fishing and cherished the tranquility that came from spending time outside. Some of his most special moments were shared with Carol at their camp on South Oromocto Lake where countless memories were created over the years. Jim had a unique way of making everyone feel like family-both people and dogs-and his gentle spirit, kind heart, and playful sense of humor will be greatly missed. He loved to tease others with warmth and good intentions, leaving smiles wherever he went.
Arrangements are entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (506-646-2424). Visitation will take place on Saturday, January 31st, from 1:00-3:00 PM, with the service immediately following in the Fundy Chapel.
Memorial donations in Jim’s memory may be made towards Diabetes Canada.
