As Ontarians prepare to vote next week, there are various chances for residents of Perth-Wellington to make their voices heard both on – and before – election day.

Why is this election happening earlier than expected?

The last time Ontarians voted was in June 2022, when the Progressive Conservatives led by Doug Ford secured a second consecutive majority. Voters from Perth-Wellington chose newcomer MPP Matthew Rae to represent them at Queen’s Park. Although the next election was scheduled for June 2026, Ford announced that he believed it was the right moment for a snap election, stating he needed another solid mandate to counter U. S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs.

“With a strong mandate, we will be able to fight with Donald Trump to make sure we stop the tariffs…. When you have a strong mandate in politics, and you have a strong mandate from the people for the next four years to last over the four years of the Trump administration, I can tell you, the opposition treats you with a little more respect, as opposed to being vulnerable,” Ford said at a late-January press conference.

Who are running locally?

A total of seven candidates are competing for the Perth-Wellington seat. They are:

Jason Davis: NDPAshley Fox: Liberal James Montgomery: New Blue Party Ian Morton: Green Party Matthew Rae: Progressive Conservative *Rob Smink: Freedom Party of Ontario Sarah Zenuh: Ontario Party

*MPP in last legislature

What plans do major parties have regarding tariffs?

The four main parties have each outlined various commitments on how they would address potential U. S. tariffs. These include:

NDP

The New Democratic Party, headed by Marit Stiles, argues that the policies of Ford’s government over the past seven years have failed “on the cost of living, housing, education, health care and more. He has left Ontario more vulnerable as a result.”

Liberal Party

The Liberal Party led by Bonnie Crombie would:Offer incentives for nurses and doctors returning from the U. S.; Eliminate what they call “the hidden tax on home building,” claiming this would save individuals $170,000 when buying new homes; Introduce gradual rent control measures; Reduce small business taxes down to 1.6 percent while increasing eligible income thresholds which they say could save business owners up to $18,000 annually; Establish a fund aimed at fighting tariffs that offers businesses access to lower-than-market interest rates (at government rates);
Ensure stimulus spending focuses on essential services like hospitals, schools, roads and transit systems;
Direct agencies and departments not to include American firms like Elon Musk’s Starlink in procurement processes and reinvest savings back into supporting this stimulus initiative;
and Work alongside other provinces towards eliminating interprovincial trade barriers.
