Richard passed away peacefully at the QEH Charlottetown with his loving wife Anne by his side. He was predeceased by his parents Louis and Lorraine (Coffin) and his first wife Judith Worthern O’Brien. 

He is survived by his children Karin O’Brien and Alan O’Brien, along with grandchildren Robbie, Jarrett, Carter, Olivia, and Reid. 

He was also a stepfather to Steven, Ann Mariee Lawrence, and Claire-Louise.

As a step Oupa, he leaves behind Cameron, Isai, Ivan, Aiden, Sarah, Kiara, and Juliet. 
Richard is mourned by his siblings Gwendolyn (William) Reid and Wayne O’Brien as well as many nieces, nephews, friends, and special friends Norman and Edith Mac Lachlan and Rowan and Edith Clattenberg. 

His education began at Parkdale School followed by Prince of Wales College and the University of New Brunswick where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. His career included service in the Royal Canadian Navy, Westine House Canada, Aramco in Saudi Arabia, Lucent Technologies in Saudi Arabia again for Canadian Forces Bosnia while also doing engineering work in Sarnia and Commissioners PEI. Richard enjoyed extensive travels to England, Europe, Canada, and South Africa with Anne. Besides work-related activities he had a great passion for sailing; he built two boats himself taught navigation at Fanshawe College ran a boat charter business in Dubai too. To his family he was known as “Mr. Fixit” along with being an avid gardener.

A special thank you goes out to the staff at Garden Home QEH Emergency Room Dr. Hennessy as well as Unit 7 for their exceptional care during this time.

Richard is resting at Belvedere Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Monday April 14th at 11 a. m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Charlottetown. This service will be livestreamed; you can view it via links on the church’s You Tube page (Livestream – You Tube) or Facebook page (Livestream – Facebook). 

Interment will take place in Bay Fortune Cemetery.

If you’d like to make a contribution in Richard’s memory donations may be made to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
