WARNING: This story contains a reference to a suspected suicide.

Police in Cornwall, Ont., report that one individual has died and another is facing life-threatening injuries following what appears to be a shooting east of the downtown area on Wednesday afternoon.

Cornwall police initially announced on social media around 1 p. m. that they were responding to a “weapons incident” on Montreal Road, just east of St. Felix Street, prompting nearby schools to go into lockdown.

By approximately 2:30 p. m., authorities stated that the situation had been brought under control.

A news release later that evening indicated that officers discovered one person with severe gunshot wounds.

A second individual was found deceased inside a residence, believed by police to have sustained an injury inflicted upon themselves. The victim was identified Thursday as a 48-year-old man from Cornwall whose name has not been disclosed.

If you or someone you know is struggling, here’s where to look for help:

If you’re worried someone you know may be at risk of suicide, you should talk to them about it, says the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention. Here are some warning signs:

Suicidal thoughts. Substance use. Purposelessness. Anxiety. Feeling trapped. Hopelessness and helplessness. Withdrawal. Anger. Recklessness. Mood changes.
