Provincial police report that a man has been charged with an upgraded murder offense, now facing first-degree murder charges related to the deaths of two individuals in southwestern Ontario last month.

On the morning of October 5, officers were dispatched to a residence in Simcoe, where they discovered 71-year-old Barbara Morgan deceased.

A 45-year-old man was taken into custody on a second-degree murder charge connected to her death, which was later confirmed to be her son.

The OPP stated that on October 16, authorities uncovered remains in a wooded area near Highway 6 and later identified them as belonging to 49-year-old Robert Sykes, who had died by homicide.

As a result, the suspect is now facing two counts of first-degree murder after the earlier second-degree charge was escalated.

Police indicated that the accused is set to appear in court in Simcoe on Friday.

This report by The Canadian Press was first Nov. 28, 2025.
