A 22-year-old man from Kingston is facing multiple criminal and provincial charges after his vehicle collided with several parked cars in the downtown area on Friday night.
Kingston Police first notified the public just before midnight on Friday that parts of Ontario Street and Johnson Street were closed due to an ongoing investigation into a motor vehicle accident.
The closures impacted Ontario Street between Johnson and Clarence streets, as well as Johnson Street between King and Ontario streets.
After reaching out to police communications on Saturday, it was confirmed that the incident happened around 10 p. m. on Friday when a car heading eastbound on Johnson Street struck multiple parked vehicles.
Police stated that one of the affected vehicles had passengers inside at the time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
According to authorities, the vehicle proceeded onto Ontario Street where the driver ultimately abandoned it and fled on foot. Patrol officers managed to apprehend the suspect shortly thereafter.
Officers attempted to pull over the vehicle before the collisions occurred, but the driver did not stop. There was no police pursuit initiated during this time.
The accused faces charges for impaired driving as well as operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration above legal limits.
The man also received charges for dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.
Additionally, he was charged under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act for driving with a suspended license.
The police have not disclosed the name of the accused individual.
An official press release from Kingston Police is anticipated on Monday.
