For over 50 years, Roger James was always doing what he loved best: making people laugh, sing, clap along, and sometimes cry.
Whether performing at a downtown pub, entertaining cruise ship passengers in the Thousand Islands, emceeing community events, or dazzling audiences with his banjo skills and quick wit, James became one of the most familiar faces in Kingston’s arts scene.
The well-loved musician, comedian and entertainer passed away unexpectedly on July 30 at the age of 74.
His passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from family, friends and fellow performers who remember him as a talented musician, a dedicated family man and a genuinely kind person whose influence reached far beyond the stage.
As noted in his official obituary, James was born in Long Island, N. Y., in 1951. He grew up in Syracuse and Detroit before eventually moving to Kingston after touring with Irish bands Tinkers Dam and Cobblers Awl. He would go on to make Kingston his home and remain an integral part of its cultural scene for many years.
“Everyone knew Roger for his public persona as the ultimate entertainer, but he was also somewhat of an introvert when it came to his private life,” shared his widow, Lynne James. “He really valued his time at home with family.”
She mentioned that behind all the jokes and performances was a man filled with generosity.
“He would never hesitate to help someone else,” she recalled. “He wanted to give back to our friends and community beyond just music.”
James first arrived in Kingston back in 1973. According to family members, he quickly became entrenched in the local music scene by performing regularly at Finnegan’s and Muldoon’s located within the Frontenac Hotel.
Eventually settling permanently in Kingston during the late 1970s after years spent touring.
His first wife, Janis James, traveled across North America with him for seven years in a motorhome while he performed with various bands.
“Roger took me on an incredible adventure,” she said. “He gave me a son and grandson who mean everything to me.”
The couple later separated but continued their close relationship while co-parenting their son Jacob alongside James’s second family.
“When they started their own family, we all agreed that our kids would come first so we built our blended families together,” Janis said. “It took hard work from everyone involved. Thankfully Lynne is such a wonderful person.”
For Jacob James-now a professional actor, theatre director and drama instructor who has spent seven seasons at the Stratford Festival while teaching at Queen’s University-his father was both a parent figure and role model.
“If it’s true that we choose our parents before we’re born, I think I made a good choice,” he reflected.
Jacob described his dad as a “one-of-a-kind nonconformist” who believed strongly in peace-a perspective partly shaped by his family’s experiences dealing with anti-Semitism throughout their lives in America.
“Our real last name was Jacobs,” he explained. “His father changed it to James because finding work became difficult.”
Certain memories stand out for Jacob from childhood-like helping set up equipment at pubs around Kingston while watching patrons greet his dad wherever they went.
“I quickly realized he had become somewhat of a local celebrity,” Jacob said proudly. “It felt great walking around beside my dad.”
A cherished memory includes visits to Kingston’s waterfront where father and son would toss stones into Lake Ontario together.
“Every time they’d hit water we’d say ‘kersplunk’ instead of ‘kerplunk,’” Jacob laughed reminiscing about those days.
Beyond any specific recollections though remained an important lesson taught by his father:
“If you’re not doing what you love then you’re wasting your time.”This philosophy has greatly influenced Jacob’s own artistic journey:“Watching my dad earn his living through performance clearly left an impression on me.”

Music played an essential role throughout Roger’s life yet rarely did it revolve solely around banjos or jokes alone. Friends describe him as versatile enough handling Celtic tunes as comfortably as bluegrass folk country blues & comedy songs while switching between guitar banjo bodhrán & piano seamlessly too! He often joked: “If you’re laughing it’s comedy; if not then it’s just music!” Friends believe this line captures perfectly how engagingly diverse all aspects were regarding performances alike. “He balanced being both court jester & heartfelt balladeer,” said Jacob adding: “He could bring laughter but also tears.” For two full decades now Joseph has been well-known among locals sailing along tourist cruises aboard vessels like Island Queen Canadian Empress alike! Few musicians have shared stages more frequently than Spencer Evans does himself. “Such open-heartedness radiated from him effortlessly,” Evans recalled fondly during breaks aboard island queen Sunday last week! “Roger committed himself entirely towards entertaining others whilst wearing smiles!” As per accounts given by friends-they affirm that even after decades spent performing extensively-it never seemed possible for him losing enthusiasm overall! Indeed every single sighting observed always revealed pure joy emanating forth upon docks nearby! Interestingly enough according again regarding them closely associated-the very day illness struck occurred happened onboard respective cruise journeys! It turned out astonishingly shocking revelation since apparently nothing appeared unusual whatsoever until happening unexpectedly right then! Longtime folk musician Kenneth Bruce aka Magoo Mac Gregor expressed personal feelings recalling how significant encounters were meeting originally way-back when entering local scenes early-mid-seventies era here too! “I truly regarded him mentor wise,” Mac Gregor commented sincerely afterward noting bonding established instantaneously thereafter becoming fast friendships formed over ensuing years crossing paths regularly found clubs festivals restaurants following shows respectively speaking!
