Wasaga Beach, known for having the longest freshwater beach in the world, has introduced a plan aimed at transforming itself into a year-round destination instead of just a summer getaway. This comes after increasing discussions about the town’s tourism goals, which include a proposed gondola project to improve visitor access, marking an effort to change how people experience the area throughout the year.

On September 24, 2026, the Town of Wasaga Beach shared its Destination Wasaga Master Plan. This plan presents a vision created by the community for enhancing the beachfront, downtown area, public spaces, and transportation links in the coming years.

Community-Driven Planning

This master plan stems from one of the largest public consultations ever held in Wasaga Beach’s history. Over 16,000 residents, visitors, businesses, and stakeholders contributed their thoughts through surveys, workshops, and public meetings.

“This plan belongs to the people who helped create it,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “It builds on everything our residents and generations of Ontarians have loved about Wasaga Beach and sets a bold course for what comes next.”

Lengthening Visitor Stays

Instead of focusing on attracting more visitors overall, this plan aims to lengthen existing stays and extend the visiting season. Currently welcoming over two million visitors each year, officials believe this strategy will help capture more value from that base by encouraging longer visits and stronger off-season interest – changing how travel advisors promote this destination for clients planning trips in Ontario.

Proposed infrastructure developments include new boardwalks stretching 4.5 kilometres, bike paths covering 3.2 kilometres, and expanding waterfront parkland by 250 hectares. Ideas being explored involve bringing back the Dardanella performance venue and building a pedestrian bridge across the Nottawasaga River that connects both ends of the beach.

has already allocated $38 million for initial projects; this includes $11 million dedicated to reconstructing Beach Drive and $25 million aimed at revitalizing Nancy Island Historic Site. Private investments are also starting to appear with plans for a Marriott-branded hotel among other early-stage projects.

“Great communities do not stand still – they make deliberate choices about the future they want to build,” Smith added. “Destination Wasaga is our community’s bold vision, and with continued support from the Province of Ontario, Government of Canada and our partners, we are ready to turn that vision into reality.”

As Wasaga Beach gets ready to cater to multi-season demand, travel advisors crafting itineraries for Ontario can sign up on Canadian Travel News’ advisor directory to connect with travelers researching spots like this one.

Moving Forward with Plans

The implementation will occur in stages where individual projects will depend on environmental assessments as well as planning and financial approvals. The town plans to provide further updates including results from Indigenous engagement efforts along with detailed designs as they transition from vision into construction.
