The Town of Wasaga Beach has shared an exciting long-term vision that will change the area from a well-loved summer escape into a destination for recreation and tourism all year round.
The newly launched Destination Wasaga Master Plan, created with support from the Government of Ontario, outlines a plan to enhance the town’s waterfront, downtown area, public spaces, transport connections, and attractions while keeping intact the natural beauty that has made Wasaga Beach one of Ontario’s standout locations.
Town leaders say the plan is guided by several important commitments. These include keeping public access to the beach, prioritizing residents’ needs, protecting sensitive environmental areas, and ensuring that growth in tourism is sustainable and well-managed.
A central principle of the plan is to guarantee that the beach stays public. This means both residents and visitors will continue to enjoy access to the world’s longest freshwater beach. The strategy also highlights environmental care and Indigenous involvement to safeguard dunes, shorelines, habitats, and other natural systems while integrating Indigenous viewpoints into future projects.
Instead of just trying to draw in more tourists, this plan focuses on creating better experiences for the millions who already visit Wasaga Beach annually. Officials aim to encourage longer visits throughout the year while supporting local businesses, enhancing residents’ quality of life, and generating new economic chances.

The master plan is also designed to attract investment and boost the local economy. One major private project under consideration is a high-end Marriott hotel proposed for the waterfront.
The plan features several notable ideas including potentially reviving the historic Dardanella as a modern cultural venue available year-round. Another highlight is an iconic pedestrian bridge over the Nottawasaga River which would provide uninterrupted access along the beachfront for the first time.
Mayor Brian Smith stated that this vision represents what community members want for their future.
“Great communities do not stand still – they make deliberate choices about the future they want to build. “Destination Wasaga is our community’s bold vision, and with the continued support and partnership of the Province of Ontario, the Government of Canada and our other partners, we are ready to turn that vision into reality.”
This plan will act as a guide for future development efforts. Each individual project will need appropriate planning approvals before moving forward. Officials say implementation will occur gradually as funding becomes available and approvals are secured.
