Ontario’s favorite beach town wants to be recognized for more than just summer activities, and a visit to the future Wasaga Beach could look quite different if the town’s ambitious new plans are realized.

The Town of Wasaga Beach announced an exciting transformation plan on Thursday, with its Destination Wasaga Master Plan outlining a bright future for this Ontario tourism hotspot that aims to evolve into a year-round attraction.

This new Master Plan – created with support from provincial funding – outlines a long-term vision for the Town’s bustling beachfront and downtown areas, along with public spaces, transit options, and more.

The Town of Wasaga Beach claims that its Master Plan is meant to attract investment, create jobs, and enhance the local tax base by turning its seasonal tourism economy into a year-round cash flow.

“This plan belongs to the people who helped create it. It builds on everything our residents and generations of Ontarians have loved about Wasaga Beach and sets a bold course for what comes next-more jobs, more investment, more opportunity and a destination we will be proud to leave to future generations,” said Wasaga Beach Mayor Brian Smith.

The proposal includes around 4.5 kilometers of new boardwalk and 3.2 kilometers of bike paths, but it’s the new attractions and landmarks that truly define this vision. One highlight of the new plan is a suggested replacement for the beloved Dardanella club that was a major tourist attraction until its closure in 2025.

This establishment, labeled as “one of Wasaga Beach’s most important historic tourism and cultural landmarks,” would be reimagined as a contemporary year-round performance venue “keeping the Dard’s celebrated dance-hall legacy while creating a year-round demand generator and destination anchor.”

A marina along Jenetta Street would replace unattractive waterfront parking lots with a new entryway to the Main End. The Town states this will attract boaters, establish fresh boardwalks and cycling routes, making it easier for visitors to access beachfront restaurants, shops, attractions, and events within walking distance.

An additional feature of the proposal includes a pedestrian bridge expected to span across the Nottawasaga River, enhancing access to one of the world’s longest freshwater beaches.

“Great communities do not stand still-they make deliberate choices about the future they want to build,” stated Mayor Smith.

“Destination Wasaga is our community’s bold vision, and with continued support from the Province of Ontario, the Government of Canada, and our other partners, we are ready to turn that vision into reality,” he added.

Even before Thursday’s announcement, signs of change were already visible in Wasaga Beach. A brand-new premium Marriott hotel along the beachfront has been planned for some time now with designs finally revealed earlier this year.

The town is also considering an aerial gondola system that would transport both tourists and locals on scenic rides along the beachfront.
