US honors 25 years since the 9/11 attacks

Hello and welcome to the US politics live blog.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11, as Americans come together to reflect on and honor the tragic impact of the attacks that took away 2,977 lives.

This significant anniversary will feature memorial activities – wreath-laying ceremonies, flag displays, moments of silence, vigils, and readings of victims’ names – along with volunteer initiatives dedicated to remembrance.

“In the course of history, there are a few moments that divide time into, really, what came before” and after, president Donald Trump said at a recent remembrance event in Washington.

The Republican leader was in New York on September 11th, 2001. He has frequently shared his memories from that day and plans to attend today’s ceremony at the Pentagon.

Vice-president JD Vance is expected to be present at the National September 11 Memorial in New York. Meanwhile, other officials from his administration are headed to Pennsylvania’s Flight 93 National Memorial.

Memorial observances are planned well beyond just where the attacks happened-ranging from beams of light shining from Mount Washington in New Hampshire to a stair climb at Mississippi State University’s football stadium and a ceremony at Honolulu’s own 9/11 memorial.

In other news today:

Donald Trump reaffirmed his promise to provide all US adults with $5,000 if Republicans maintain control of Congress during midterm elections. He’s among the very few people bringing up this pledge tonight since many lawmakers-including his vice-president JD Vance-are avoiding mention of this “dividend” entirely. Trump defended his proposal by saying: “We can do that because our country has never done better. We’re taking in trillions, trillions of dollars.”

In a much shorter address than his nearly two-hour speech earlier this week, Trump urged voters again to “pretend I’m on the ticket” for November. In an impromptu loyalty pledge to himself, he asked those present to commit to voting in midterm elections no matter what. The president instructed Republicans there to repeat after him: “I don’t care if I’m registered or not. I’m going to try. And cheat like hell like they do.” He also warned attendees in Dallas they would “go to hell” if they didn’t vote.

Earlier today, JD Vance encouraged Republicans who might disagree with parts of Trump’s agenda not to leave the party for November’s congressional races. The vice-president referred to Charlie Kirk-a conservative activist killed one year ago today-to emphasize that voters shouldn’t “throw out everything over just one policy issue”, seemingly hinting at dissent regarding the Iran war without directly naming it.

Vance’s speech seemed like an audition for a potential presidential run in 2028; he dedicated most of his time discussing threats posed by what he called the “far left”, highlighting accomplishments from their administration while criticizing Joe Biden’s presidency.

At the same time outside the arena were dozens protesting against Trump’s policies. Dallas police reported that two individuals were taken into custody following an alleged assault involving a counter-protester and for obstructing traffic.

He saw one right after September 11 itself. “Missing,” read a quickly made poster stuck onto a bar window in Tribeca offering food and water for first responders-pleading for information about someone who had vanished during America’s deadliest terrorist attack.

“I thought, ‘Wow, this is going to be …’” remembers Phil Buehler-a photographer who witnessed both towers fall from his office window. “But you knew there would be so few survivors then.”

The missing posters continued appearing days following 9/11; Buehler kept capturing them on camera but eventually stored over 500 images away because he couldn’t bear looking at them anymore.

As we approach this milestone anniversary of tragedy again now though he chose instead revisit those memories-he’ll publicly display some selections for very first time this week through Countenance: The 9/11 Missing Posters exhibition located inside Most Holy Trinity – St Mary’s church in Brooklyn featuring pairs across translucent vellum panels reminiscent visually alike twin towers laid out vertically across twenty-four panels total showcasing one hundred forty-four images altogether.

Buehler always loved photographing World Trade Center since starting back when he was sixteen years old back around nineteen seventy-three-even turning down an invite sent months prior by tech start-up friends asking him join them up high above downtown Manhattan during conference held atop Windows On The World restaurant positioned north tower due timing delays experienced too late arrival meant missing out completely!

“The guy who invited us died that day-and my friend still feels guilty about it,” he says quietly recalling how nearly three thousand lives were lost when terrorists hijacked planes striking targets across Virginia territory alongside Pennsylvania countryside further afield too beyond NY scene! ”You realize how close-you could feel everybody had stories like ours.”

Stanley Praimnath tells it regularly yet each time resonates differently somehow stronger than before-it feels as vivid now recounting what unfolded back then: “Oh gosh,” voice cracking adding extra weight hearing himself say things aloud once more indicating it felt intense reliving whatever happened next.”

Almost three thousand individuals tragically lost their lives due violent actions occurring within NYC/Washington DC on September eleventh year two-thousand-one however only four individuals managed survive above impact zones within either tower–Praimnath meeting another worker named Brian Clark amid thick smoke/fires while descending down stairs totaling sixteen hundred twenty steps toward eventual safety outside onto streets below together making fresh new starts ahead thereafter eventually growing older witnessing families grow throughout decades ahead still sharing experiences often telling others-including schools/churches/media outlets! “Could be eight-hundred or twelve-hundred-I couldn’t tell you exact count,” Clark estimates remaining humble regarding broader audience impact realizing vastness involved here too!”

Praimnath muses separately noting how people recognize him simply as ‘the nine eleven guy’ feeling pride nonetheless despite repetitiveness longing reassurances sought stating clearly purpose found comfort speaking truthfully recalling moments surrounding events closely associated revealing emotions underlying existence endured even til today.”
