Trevor Jones, the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Chatham-Kent-Leamington, has been appointed to a new ministerial position.
Premier Doug Ford shared updates about his cabinet on Thursday, announcing that Jones will now serve as the Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
He takes over from David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South, who is currently under investigation by the Ontario Integrity Commissioner for allegedly misusing public funds.
Jones spent the last year and a half as Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness.
While he wasn’t available to comment on his new responsibilities, Ford mentioned that these changes aim to better position the province during ongoing trade tensions with the U. S.
“President Trump is once again taking aim at Ontario’s economy with his latest round of tariffs and anti-trade measures. Ontario won’t back down. We’re preparing for the long haul, and that means putting the right team in place to protect Ontario workers and jobs today while building the most competitive, resilient and self-reliant economy in the G7 that can withstand whatever challenges come our way,” said Ford.
Jones has represented his riding since 2022, having been re-elected during last year’s provincial election.
Throughout his political career, he’s held various roles such as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; Deputy Government House Leader; Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade; and Associate Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Response.
The new Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness will be Sam Oosterhoff, who is MPP for Niagara West.
