Trevor Jones, the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Chatham-Kent-Leamington, has a new position in the cabinet.
On Thursday, Premier Doug Ford revealed changes to his team, announcing that Jones will be the new Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
He takes over from David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South, who is currently under investigation by the Ontario Integrity Commissioner for allegedly mishandling public funds.
Jones previously served as Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness for the last year and a half.
Though he wasn’t available to comment on his new role, Ford mentioned that these adjustments were made to better equip the province during the ongoing trade conflict with the U. S.
“President Trump is once again taking aim at Ontario’s economy with his latest round of tariffs and anti-trade measures. Ontario won’t back down. We’re preparing for the long haul, and that means putting the right team in place to protect Ontario workers and jobs today while building the most competitive, resilient and self-reliant economy in the G7 that can withstand whatever challenges come our way,” said Ford.
Since 2022, Jones has represented his riding as MPP after winning re-election last year.
Over his political career, he’s held various roles including Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Deputy Government House Leader, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and Associate Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Response.
Taking over Jones’ former role as Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness is Sam Oosterhoff from Niagara West.
