The Region of Waterloo is bringing on a new senior water official as it tackles capacity issues that are hindering growth in the Mannheim service area.
Ishtiaque Tunio, P. Eng., PE, PMP, will start his role as the Region’s commissioner of water and wastewater services today (Sept. 8).
Tunio has over 20 years of experience in the public sector managing large infrastructure projects, including water and wastewater systems, transportation infrastructure, and utility programs.
He has held key roles with the cities of Mississauga and Ottawa, the Maryland Transportation Authority, Metrolinx, and the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority.
His past work includes significant infrastructure initiatives like the Union Station Rail Corridor program and the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Officials from the Region stated that Tunio’s background will be vital in moving forward with projects aimed at boosting water capacity in the Mannheim service area-an increasingly critical issue as Waterloo Region continues to expand.
“We are excited to announce that Ishtiaque Tunio is joining us here at the Region of Waterloo as commissioner of water and wastewater services,” said chief administrative officer Darshpreet Bhatti in a news release. He added that Tunio’s expertise in delivering water and wastewater projects across several Ontario municipalities will assist the Region in collaborating with municipal, provincial, and community partners to enhance water capacity.
The Region has recognized additional infrastructure for water and wastewater as essential for supporting future development within its borders.
Tunio expressed enthusiasm about joining at a pivotal moment when planning for a growing community is underway.
<p“Throughout my career, I have focused on bringing people and organizations together to deliver complex infrastructure safely, responsibly, and with a long-term perspective,” Tunio said.
Tunio holds a Master of Engineering degree in civil engineering from the University of Toronto. He is also a licensed professional engineer in both Canada and the United States. Additionally, he holds certification as a Project Management Professional.
Tunio plans to collaborate with local municipalities, provincial authorities, and community leaders as he works on solutions meant to increase water capacity for the Region.
The Mannheim service area covers parts of Waterloo, Kitchener, and nearby regions. It has been central to regional efforts aimed at enhancing service capacity necessary for accommodating future growth.
