Housing cash on the way after 'speed lobbying' sessions in Ottawa: Mississauga mayor

A quick trip to Ottawa this week has brought some important funding for housing to Mississauga and Peel Region, according to the city’s mayor.

While she didn’t specify how much cash is coming to Mississauga and Peel, Mayor Carolyn Parrish mentioned on Tuesday that the City of Mississauga’s team was “well received” at the 2026 Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference.

Mississauga Deputy Mayor and Ward 8 Coun. Matt Mahoney, Ward 3 Coun. Chris Fonseca, City Manager Geoff Wright, and other senior leaders joined Parrish in discussions with Ontario cabinet ministers, opposition leaders, MPPs, and industry representatives to promote Mississauga’s priorities.

After attending about 10 meetings over two days in the capital at the annual conference, Parrish shared on social media that it felt “kind of like speed lobbying.”

She added, “we were well received and our requests are being answered with two large grants – can’t report amounts yet – to Mississauga and to Peel in response to our cutting development charges and other housing incentives.”

Alongside affordable housing, other issues brought up by Mississauga’s delegation this week included improving public transit, boosting economic growth and trade resilience, tackling flood prevention and infrastructure needs, establishing a fair police funding formula in Peel, as well as investing in arts, culture and sports facilities, city officials noted.

The safety concerns surrounding electric scooters in Mississauga were also addressed by city officials – a topic that has been frequently discussed at city council over the past two years.

Parrish mentioned that Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria met with the delegation from Mississauga and “laid out plans to address many of the concerns about electric scooters shared by police officers, medical practitioners, many city councillors and the team.”

Regarding policing matters, Mississauga has long been advocating for changes to the funding formula for Peel Regional Police. The mayor and councillors have repeatedly described the current arrangement as unfair to Canada’s seventh-largest city and its residents.

Who would you vote for as Mississauga mayor?

Following last year’s release of the 2025 Peel police budget early last year, Parrish referred to it in a letter sent to the province at that time as “… a most egregious burden on Mississauga taxpayers. Peel Regional Police have presented us with a 2025 budget increase of $144 million or 23.3 percent. Mississauga will again carry 62 percent of the cost while Brampton pays only 38 percent despite almost identical populations.”
