For those in search of more sports fields, there’s good news! A large area has been secured for new soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and cricket pitches.

This week, the Town of Whitby revealed plans to enhance recreational areas by acquiring over 60 hectares of land in North Whitby for a future outdoor sports complex.

The addition of these facilities comes as the opening of the new Fieldgate Sports Complex approaches. This $155 million Brooklin sports center, set to open later this year, will boast Durham’s largest pool, a twin pad arena, a multi-purpose gymnasium and much more. The outdoor section will include lit pickleball, tennis and basketball courts, Whitby’s first multi-purpose artificial turf field, a skatepark and pump track along with other features.

The new project will be located on land east of Duffs Road and north of Brawley Road. According to a news release from the town, this site aims to expand field capacity and meet the growing demand for cricket, soccer, and baseball facilities.

The town plans to develop the land using a multi-phase approach over several years, aligning construction schedules with Whitby’s growth and budget considerations.

“This project reflects the priorities you shared with us in your community strategic plan,” Mayor Elizabeth Roy stated in a video shared on social media.

“It will help fulfill future needs for our residents by adding more soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and cricket pitches. This is an extensive project that we’ll implement in phases; input from the community will be essential as we proceed.”

A recent news release indicated that this plan is still in its early stages and builds upon feedback collected through Whitby’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Future consultations with residents and various groups will guide the design process as well as amenities and programming decisions.

Future engagement opportunities with residents and user groups are planned to further refine design elements as well as amenities and programming details.

Once completed, the site is expected to feature six baseball diamonds, six soccer fields and two full-size cricket pitches.

“We’ve clearly heard that demand for field sports is increasing – this project directly addresses that feedback,” Matt Gaskell, Whitby’s CAO said in a statement.

“By taking a phased approach over multiple years we can build thoughtfully while aligning with available funding resources. We’ll continue shaping this plan alongside our community.”
