Highway 401 was shut down in both directions Wednesday night close to Gananoque, Ont., after an accident involving multiple vehicles, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.
Police reported that the incident took place just before 10 p. m.
In an email sent to CBC shortly after 10:40 p. m., an OPP representative stated that officers were still figuring out how many vehicles and individuals were involved.
“This is a serious collision, and the roads may remain closed for several hours,” the email read.
OPP mentioned that updates would be shared on social media concerning the road closure, with more information expected in the morning.
Drivers are advised to take alternate routes and prepare for delays during a “prolonged closure” as investigations and clean-up efforts are ongoing, police noted in a social media post shared on Wednesday night.
As of 11:00 p. m., the highway was still closed.
