Two individuals have lost their lives and three more have sustained injuries after a crash on Highway 401 in Mississauga early Wednesday morning, according to police.
The Ontario Provincial Police shared on X that one vehicle collided into the back of another in the eastbound express lanes near Dixie Road just before 9 a. m., as traffic was slowing down.
Authorities reported that an 80-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, both from Cambridge and passengers in the car that was hit, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The other three people involved were transported to the hospital with injuries, with at least one being airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition.
The eastbound express lanes of Highway 401 were closed from east of Mississauga Road to east of Dixie Road. Additionally, the eastbound express lanes of Hwy. 403 were also shut down beyond Eglinton Avenue to the 401 for most of the day due to the ongoing investigation.
The highway has since been reopened.
