Michael Hutchinson had a standout career with his hometown Barrie Colts before moving on to play in places like Winnipeg, Newfoundland, and Finland.

The 36-year-old Barrie native has decided to retire from professional hockey after more than ten years in the sport.

He shared the news of his retirement today on social media through the NHL Alumni account.

The right-handed catching Hutchinson played for the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League from 2006 to 2010, wrapping up his junior career with the London Knights during the 2009-10 season.

During this time, he was picked in the third round (77th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins.

Hutchinson spent four years in minor leagues, including American Hockey League and ECHL stops in Providence, R. I., Reading, Pa., Ontario, Calif., and St. John’s, N. L., before making his NHL debut with the Winnipeg Jets in the 2013-14 season.

Known as ‘Hutch’ among teammates and fans alike, he played his first NHL game on April 7, 2014. Just three days later, on April 10, Hutchinson secured his first victory in the league.

He made an impressive entrance into the NHL with a record of 2-1 and posted a goals-against average (GAA) of 1.64 along with a.943 save percentage (SV%).

His first career shutout came in his initial start of the 2014-15 season when he stopped all 33 shots to lead the Jets to a 1-0 win on Nov. 2, 2014.

Hutchinson served as goaltender for the Jets for three seasons thereafter, ending up with a record of 39-37-11.

<p Following that period, Hutchinson bounced between NHL and AHL teams over several years while playing for AHL's Manitoba Moose, Springfield Thunderbirds, Toronto Marlies, Henderson Silver Knights, and Grand Rapids Griffins.

In total at the NHL level, Hutchinson played in 154 games across teams including the Jets, Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche (where he also appeared in four playoff games during the 2019-20 season), Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings.

He wrapped up his professional career with Sai Pa Lappeenranta in Finland’s Elite League during the 20224-25 campaign.
