Patrick Brown has made it official; he’s running for a third term as mayor of Brampton, a role he first took on in 2018.

The current mayor submitted his candidacy papers at Brampton City Hall on Tuesday. He’ll be competing against seven other candidates in the race: Jagruti Bhatt, Avi Dhaliwal, Vidya Sagar Gautam, Gursimranjit Singh, Tirth Vinodkumar Patel, Gaurav Walia and Sandeep Somal.

Brown shared with reporters on Tuesday that he’ll keep focusing on public safety, saying he’s running again to “keep the momentum we have for the transformational projects we’re having in our city right now” like the upcoming building of Brampton’s second hospital and extending the Hazel Mc Callion light-rail transit line into the city.

“I’m excited by the progress we’re making, but there’s still work that needs to be embarked upon,” he said.

Brown’s career spans decades as a politician across all three levels of government in Ontario.

He was previously leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party but stepped down in 2018 after facing allegations of sexual misconduct from his time as a federal Member of Parliament (Brown has denied these claims and maintains his innocence).

After he resigned as PC Leader, Doug Ford took over and Brown went on to run for mayor of Brampton.

Before successfully winning his second term as mayor in 2022, Brown attempted to lead the federal Conservative Party but was disqualified due to alleged breaches related to financing rules under the Canada Elections Act.

The municipal election is set for Oct. 26. Candidates have until Aug. 21 to register.
