It’s a sad time in Tillsonburg, Ont. as the ZF-TRW plant gets ready to move its operations to Mexico, according to a spokesperson from the company.

The facility currently has 71 employees.

Production is expected to wind down by the end of November, with a few employees remaining through December. The plant will officially close by year’s end.

This plant started operating in 1979 as TRW Automotive and continued after it was acquired by ZF Group, as shared by Tillsonburg economic development commissioner Cephas Panschow.

“They’ve been part of our community for coming up on 40 years.. There’s a long history of people that have worked for the plant,” said Panschow.

“The employees there have been very loyal, they’ve worked at the plant for many, many years. This is upsetting for them and the job loss is obviously concerning them,” he added.

Panschow expressed optimism about the town’s economic future and referred to the plant closure as a ‘blip’ in an otherwise positive recovery since the 2008 recession.

He mentioned that the town has welcomed ‘three or four’ new manufacturers recently and expects to find a buyer for the former facility soon.

“We’ve been in a good spot with respect to employment growing here, but obviously these things happen,” he said.

“We’ll work with them to help the employees find other opportunities in the Tillsonburg marketplace.”
