A jury has found Glen Mayer guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Tony Bechara.

The jury delivered their verdict on Friday afternoon, after hearing closing arguments the day before.

Mayer confessed to shooting Bechara at his Belle River home on January 20, 2024, after he drove there to confront him about his affair with Mayer’s wife.

Closing arguments presented two contrasting views. The Crown claimed that Mayer intended to kill Bechara, while the defense argued that killing was never his plan, stating that Mayer was drunk and meant to take his own life before encountering Bechara.

<p. After the verdict was announced in a crowded courtroom on Friday afternoon, Crown prosecutor Craig Houle commented that it’s a sad situation for both families involved.

Mayer is set to be sentenced later this summer.

According to the Criminal Code of Canada, first-degree murder comes with an automatic life sentence without parole eligibility for at least 25 years.
