People who enjoy watching hummingbirds in Southern Ontario should get ready, as the yearly spring migration of ruby-throated hummingbirds heads north.

“It is time to make sure our feeders are ready, Southern Ontario,” a recent post from the Ontario Hummingbird Sightings Reporting group on Facebook said, as the birds begin their journey toward the region

The group notes the “leading edge” of the migration has already reached parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania, putting the first arrivals within reach of the province. Early migrants (often males) are described as “the true explorers.. now officially bordering Southern Ontario.”

Peak arrival is still expected in mid-to-late April, as the birds follow emerging insect populations needed for protein. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to prepare feeders and report any early sightings.
