The hot weather that affected Waterloo Region during Canada Day is back.

A yellow-level heat warning is currently in effect for not just Waterloo Region, but all of Ontario.

Environment Canada has issued a severe orange warning for much of northern Ontario, including Kenora, Thunder Bay, Fort Hope and Timmins.

Forecasters predict that those regions could experience temperatures up to 36 C, with the humidex making it feel as high as 42, before conditions ease later on Tuesday.

Less severe yellow warnings have been issued for southern Ontario, covering areas like Waterloo Region, Guelph, Woodstock, Windsor, Toronto, North Bay and Ottawa.

During this heat wave peaking on Tuesday and lasting until Wednesday or Thursday, some locations may see temperatures nearly hitting 36 C.

“Take action to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone’s health,” reads the alert from Environment Canada.

“Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Stop your activity and drink water.”

This extreme heat has already led to an increase in emergency calls throughout the region this summer.

In the last heat wave at the end of June, Chief of the Region’s Paramedic Services John Riches told City News that local paramedics had experienced a 14 to 14.5 percent rise in calls compared to last year during the same timeframe.

Riches emphasized that taking care of yourself is key to avoiding emergency situations.

“Make sure you stay hydrated. Make sure you stay in the shade if you can. Make sure you’re using a lot of sunscreen and wearing appropriate layers to protect your skin and yourself from this heat. And just taking care of yourself, making sure you’re eating well. All those things are very important.”

The City of Kitchener has added staff members and extended hours at outdoor pools to help residents cope with the heat this week.

The Harry Class, Wilson and Idlewood pools will remain open daily until 8:45 p. m., while Kiwanis Park pool will close at 8:30 p. m.
