Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump took a strong stance against Canada on Sunday regarding tariffs. He further criticized the overall trade and economic relationship between Ottawa and Washington. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Canada wants all the benefits of being a US state, without actually being one.”
Trump didn’t hold back in his remarks. He accused the Canadian government of placing unfair tariffs and restrictions on American agricultural products. He noted, “They also imposed massive, high tariffs on our great farmers for many years, and we will not allow that to happen again.” These comments come at a time when trade tensions between the two nations are increasing alongside growing international issues.
In reaction, Canada released a strong statement. Prime Minister Mark Carney claimed that the United States is using new policies and tariffs as a means to “harm and divide” Canada. He called the US actions a “grave miscalculation.” Carney promised to respond in kind by implementing dollar-for-dollar tariffs starting September 8.
The Canadian Prime Minister also revealed that Ottawa has decided to suspend trade talks with Washington. This decision followed demands from the US administration that Canada found unacceptable. In response, US Trade Representative Jamison Greer remarked that Canada had suddenly pulled out from an almost finalized trade agreement aimed at lowering tariffs on its exports to the US market.
