Five children lost their lives and several others were hurt in a two-vehicle crash in rural Ontario, as reported by the Ontario Provincial Police.

The OPP stated that the incident occurred around 7:30 p. m., on Friday evening, in Mapleton Township, at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12. This location is approximately 35 km northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo.

A total of 11 people were involved in the accident, Dwight Thib, commander for the OPP West Region, shared during a news conference on Saturday.

According to Thib, ten individuals in a passenger van collided with one person in an SUV at the intersection.

In this tragic event, four girls and one boy died, he mentioned. The ages of the children were four, six, eight, ten, and twelve years old. They were all part of the same family.

All passengers and drivers involved sustained injuries or fatalities, investigators noted.

At least three individuals had to be airlifted to different trauma centers while others were taken to nearby hospitals.

The collision took place in Mapleton Township, which is located northwest of Kitchener-Waterloo:

The OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team has been called to assist, and traffic will be redirected around the area while investigations continue.

The intersection will remain closed for most of Saturday, officers added.

Police have stated they won’t share more information until they inform the next of kin about the victims.
