Provincial police say the absence of seatbelts might have played a role in the deaths of four teens from the Greater Toronto Area in a single-vehicle crash near Guelph early Saturday morning.
Officers reported that they received a call just after 1:30 a. m. about a crash on Watson Road South, just north of Wellington Road 34 in Wellington County. Investigators found that the vehicle left the road, hit a guardrail, and went into a ravine.
Two 19-year-old men from Mississauga and Brampton, along with a 17-year-old girl from Mississauga and a 15-year-old girl from Milton were confirmed dead at the scene. A 17-year-old girl from Mississauga was taken to the hospital with “life-altering” injuries while another 16-year-old girl, also from Mississauga, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
“I don’t believe that this vehicle had enough seatbelts for the amount of occupants that were in the vehicle at the time,” said Insp. Karen Medeiros in an update Sunday morning, adding that authorities were still trying to find out if speed and/or lack of seatbelts contributed to this tragic accident.
“Four young people have lost their lives, families have been forever changed and an entire community is searching for answers,” said Medeiros. “This tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the lives that can be forever changed by serious collision.”
Authorities state that the road remains closed as they continue to repair damage to the guardrail caused by this incident.
