New details are coming to light about the shocking attack that took place at the Mandarin restaurant on Barton Street this past Sunday afternoon.
The Department of National Defense confirmed to CHCH News that the 59-year-old victim, who sustained life-altering injuries, is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces.
According to police, the man was assaulted by a 12-year-old boy, and a 48-year-old woman has also been charged in connection with the incident.
Residents of Hamilton are in disbelief over what reportedly occurred at the Centre on Barton last Sunday.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s crazy that this is happening in Canada.”
“I’m so upset I don’t even wanna go out anymore.”
Hamilton police report that it all began when two young people approached cadets selling poppies outside the restaurant and blasted a loud air horn near their ears.
A 59-year-old member of the Canadian Armed Forces, who was supervising those cadets, entered the restaurant to address the youths. Police indicate he was subsequently attacked by the 12-year-old boy, while a woman dining in the establishment also intervened.
“A 48-year-old female with no relation to anyone involved in this situation opted to jump in and assist the youths during this struggle,” says Const. Trevor Mc Kenna.

Authorities state that after committing the violent act, both youths fled alongside the woman; however, later on, both a 12-year-old boy and a 48-year-old woman were arrested and charged with assault.
The woman charged has been identified as Estela Quintanilla, and her next court appearance is set for February 4th.
Officers report that after being repeatedly punched while on the ground inside the restaurant, the man suffered life-altering injuries.
Ward 4 Councillor-elect Jason Farr mentioned he plans to collaborate with organizations aimed at engaging young people in recreational activities to steer them away from trouble.
He noted that residents have expressed concern about an increase in youth crime.
“It’s gone beyond mischief and it’s become concerning for neighbourhoods,” says Farr. “We are seeing a bit of a trend here with youth crime, youth violence and many people in various neighbourhoods of Ward 4 are quite concerned.”
The manager of Mandarin chose not to comment about Tuesday’s incident.
“I can’t believe it. Like what’s happening in this area and in Hamilton. It’s really scary.”
