A 46-year-old dad who was killed in Vaughan, Ont., was shot in front of his wife and children while trying to protect them during a home invasion early Sunday morning.
“This innocent man had his doors kicked in in the middle of the night, four people went inside – with his three kids and wife present – one had a gun pointed at one of the kids, he stepped up to protect them and these criminals shot him dead right there, twice,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.
“Just think about the trauma these kids will carry for the rest of their lives.”
The incident occurred at a residence in a new neighborhood in Kleinburg just before 1 a. m., according to York Regional Police, who have named the victim as Abdul Aleem Farooqi. At least three masked individuals dressed in dark clothing entered the home located at 22 Andreeta Dr. in what police are treating as a “targeted incident.”
Farooqi’s obituary and a post from his company, Unique Providers Air Duct Cleaning based in Toronto, confirmed that he was a father of four.
“He will always be remembered for his service, humility, and faith,” the post stated. “May Allah grant him maghfirat and give patience to his family.”
After police arrived at the scene, a neighbor reported seeing a woman “fall to the ground” crying after talking with officers and heard a teenage boy repeatedly saying “My dad,” according to the . The neighbor mentioned that this family would often bring “chocolate and gifts” to nearby homes during holidays.
“These victims are absolutely true victims,” Ron Chhinzer, a federal Conservative candidate for Oakville in this spring’s election and former Toronto police officer, shared on X over the weekend.
Prabmeet Sarkaria, representing Brampton South in Ontario’s legislature, described it as “heartbreaking and enraging.” On X he wrote, “No parent should ever have to face the nightmare of someone pointing a gun at their child inside their own home.”
King-Vaughan MPP Stephen Lecce noted on X that he had met Farooqi and would remember him as both good family man and hardworking business leader.
The identifies Farooqi as the owner of Unique Providers Air Duct Cleaning which operates within Toronto. He appears in several You Tube videos uploaded on his company’s channel six years ago.
Chhinzer was joined by Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre who expressed being “heartbroken” after hearing about another homicide occurring shortly after days earlier within this area. On Wednesday afternoon 41-year-old Deuvane Donald Francis succumbed to injuries from gunshots received at another Vaughan commercial site.
“The crime wave sweeping our country must end with strict laws that crack down on criminals and stop violence throughout our communities,” Poilievre posted on X.
