Toronto may have Canada’s most iconic skyline, but another city in Ontario is quickly adding its own towers and changing the landscape. A lot of exciting developments are on the way.
The City of Vaughan has recently given the go-ahead for a major project that will bring 17 towers to the growing Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) area. This will further enhance the new downtown core that has already transformed the local skyline over the past decade.
This ambitious 27-acre Toromont Master Plan includes 17 towers that could rival many established Ontario skylines, highlighted by a massive 73-storey building.
If developer Toromont and WZMH Architects see their vision come to life, this plan would add an incredible 9,950 residential units spread across four development blocks, along with office spaces, hotels, retail shops, and community areas.
A key feature of this project is a public space commitment of 1.6 acres designed to connect the new community with its surroundings. This includes plans for Millway Linear Park and Central Park.
A development of this magnitude in a suburban area typically leads to thousands more cars on local roads. However, Toromont and WZMH are looking to take advantage of VMC’s excellent transit links. Since 2017, it’s been home to the northwest end of TTC’s Line 1 subway extension. Besides easy access to TTC, they also plan for over 8,000 bicycle parking spots.
Of course, constructing 17 towers doesn’t happen overnight – especially with today’s housing market challenges. The project will be rolled out in phases, starting with nearly 3,300 residential units alongside office space and parts of the planned park network.
“We are delighted to have designed and help guide this project through to its final approval,” said WZMH Principal Len Abelman.
“We are also incredibly proud of the collaborative effort between our team, Toromont Industries, the City of Vaughan and Council, and the many consultants and stakeholders who helped bring this vision forward. We are excited to see the project move toward realization and contribute to Vaughan’s continued growth as a vibrant urban centre.”
