The Ontario government is starting a significant expansion of the Durham College Oshawa GO Transit station as work to extend the Lakeshore East line to Bowmanville progresses.

Situated on Bloor Street West, just southwest of Stevenson Road South and Highway 401, the Durham College Oshawa GO station marks the current eastern end of the Lakeshore East line. It’s also a Via Rail station and provides several connections for Durham Region Transit and GO Transit buses.

On Wednesday, construction teams officially kicked off work to create two new sets of tracks, a new north platform with a canopy and snow-melting system, an extended southside platform, two new pedestrian bridges, and a revamped bus loop.

Officials indicated that these upgrades are necessary to handle future passenger demand along with the extension of the Lakeshore East line into Bowmanville.

Efforts to bring GO trains to Bowmanville began back in the mid-2010s under the previous Liberal administration, but construction has intensified in recent years under the current government. Related construction projects for the Bowmanville extension are also ongoing in other parts of Oshawa.

It remains unclear when this project is expected to be completed.
