Sporting a Team Canada football shirt, Mr. Ford revealed the sign close to Grimsby, Ontario, and took some photos.
The 24 by 12-foot sign is elevated on six-foot legs, making its height about 18 feet off the ground – roughly two stories high. The message appears in both French and English.
This display came after Mr. Trump’s executive order instructing US federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America”.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to President Donald Trump’s “Lake America” announcement with a billboard-sized message along the Canadian shore.
After months of tariffs, threats suggesting that Canada should become the 51st US state, and personal insults directed at its leaders, reactions in Canada have mixed defiance with humor.
Mr. Ford remarked that Mr. Trump was attempting to change the lake’s name because Ontario and Canada were “standing up for ourselves” and asserted that the original name would endure beyond the presidency.
“Long after President Trump is gone, it will still be called Lake Ontario,” Mr. Ford stated in a video shared on social media.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew likened Mr. Trump to an aging rock band trying to revive an old hit.
“You know when a rock band is really past their prime and you see them playing at a casino performing songs from decades ago? I think that’s where we are with Donald Trump right now – like he thought he had a real hit with Gulf of Mexico,” Mr. Kinew said regarding Mr. Trump’s order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America.
“And he’s trying to bring that back; he’s trying to play those hits for his base. But I think everyone here feels it’s a bit sad and not his best work.”
The ridicule wasn’t confined just to politicians; Canadian historian Robert Bothwell had even harsher words.
“The greatest country on earth takes this moron seriously?” Mr. Bothwell expressed.

However, Mr. Bothwell noted that this disagreement holds more weight than mere jokes, arguing that Mr. Trump’s broader objective was “to subordinate Canada and at best make it a colony, or worse yet absorb it into the United States”.
Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, mentioned that Mr. Trump “would like Canada to behave like a vassal state but it refuses to comply. That annoys him.”
This dispute arises as relations between these long-time allies deteriorate over trade issues. Negotiations fell apart last week as both governments blamed each other for late demands while Canada announced retaliatory tariffs set to begin next month.
Mr. Trump’s order also followed escalating tensions with Mr. Ford directly. In an interview earlier this week with The Associated Press, Mr. Ford commented that Ronald Reagan would be “throwing up” over Trump’s tariff policies and would be “disgusted with President Trump”.
Mr. Trump reacted by dismissing Mr. Ford’s remarks as “bluster,” referring to him as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s “flunky” and mocking him as the “less charismatic, intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother” of late Toronto mayor Rob Ford.
This past Saturday, Mr. Trump continued promoting the new name by sharing a meme showing Canadian geese sporting hair similar to his while firing rifles as they “protected” Lake America.
Mr. Trump has frequently used maps for political statements; there was even a “Gulf of America” map displayed near the Resolute Desk in his Oval Office previously while he has posted images depicting Canada included within US borders or labeled as its 51st state.
The term Lake Ontario derives from a word used by the Huron Indigenous people: “oniatarí: io,” which means “lake of shining waters.”
The Canadian province named Ontario was established in 1867 and took its name from this lake.
