INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) — Two members of Indiana’s leading political team shared on Friday that the ongoing trade conflict between the U. S. and Canada is likely to negatively affect both consumers and producers in Indiana.

President Donald Trump has announced a new set of tariffs against Canada, prompting that country’s leaders to implement their own retaliatory tariffs.

In 2025, Canada purchased $12.9 billion worth of goods, ranking just behind Italy as the top buyer, according to the U. S. Trade Representative.

During a panel discussion for “All INdiana Politics,” Republican strategist Lacey Berkshire mentioned that this trade dispute will probably hurt farmers and manufacturers in Indiana; however, she noted that any short-term challenges could be worthwhile if it results in a more favorable trade deal.

“I think it’s worth the risk if we end up in a better deal at the end of it, right? That’s kind of the only time tariffs actually makes sense,” she said.

Democratic strategist Brad Boswell pointed out that free trade helps keep prices low and markets stable, which makes Indiana consumers particularly vulnerable to these new tariffs.

“We’re one of the largest manufacturing states in the country,” he said. “I mean, look, (Canada’s) a big trade partner for us, so we have to keep those borders open and get the supplies flowing both ways.”

“All INdiana Politics” airs at 9:30 a. m. Sunday on WISH-TV and 11:35 p. m. Sunday on WRTV6.
