A 38-year-old individual has lost their life, and four others were hospitalized, including two police officers, after two different accidents occurred in the same area on Highway 401 in Pickering early Sunday morning, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
Officers arrived at about 2:40 a. m. following reports of a collision involving a pickup truck and a passenger vehicle in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Westney Road, as stated by the OPP in a news release.
The pickup truck was driving against traffic, heading west in the eastbound lanes, OPP spokesperson Taylor Konkle told .
The driver of the passenger vehicle was declared dead at the scene, while the pickup truck driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital, he added.
In an afternoon update from OPP on Sunday, it was revealed that the 41-year-old pickup truck driver has been charged with dangerous and impaired operation causing death.
<p Around 4:25 a. m., another crash occurred nearby between a passenger vehicle and a police cruiser, reported the OPP.
The passenger vehicle struck the back of the cruiser as officers were setting up roadblocks, Konkle explained.
Two officers were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries while the driver of the passenger vehicle was treated for minor injuries.
All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 at Whites Road were closed for an ongoing investigation but have since reopened.
The eastbound collector lanes of Highway 401 at Brock Road in Pickering were also closed temporarily but have now reopened, according to Konkle.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed either collision or has dashcam footage to reach out to OPP or Crime Stoppers.
