One man has lost his life, and two police officers are hospitalized after a couple of crashes that have closed part of a major highway in Ontario.
According to the OPP Highway Safety Division, the first crash took place shortly before 3 a. m. on Sunday on Highway 401 close to Brock Road in Pickering.
A passenger vehicle collided with a pickup truck, resulting in the tragic death of a 38-year-old man at the scene, according to police.
Eastbound lanes of Highway 401 have been shut down at Whites Road as authorities continue their investigation.
There was also a second crash nearby just before 4:30 a. m., police confirmed.
This “secondary collision” involved a police cruiser and another vehicle, leading to injuries for two officers. Fortunately, their injuries are serious but not life-threatening or life-altering.
Highway 401 remains closed at Whites Road, and law enforcement is advising drivers to steer clear of the area and seek alternate routes if they can.
