A passenger who was thrown from a vehicle is in critical condition, and the driver has been charged with impairment following a single-vehicle accident on Highway 19 close to Tillsonburg early Friday morning.

Norfolk OPP, along with fire and paramedics, responded to the crash on the highway between Carson Line and County Road 30 shortly after 1 a. m.

According to police, the passenger was airlifted to a trauma center.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

“This is a really scary situation and, unfortunately, it was something preventable,” said Norfolk OPP Const. Andrew Gamble in a video shared on social media. “As we know, year after year, impaired driving remains a leading cause in collisions that result in serious injuries or death.”

A 23-year-old man from Oxford County has been charged with impaired driving, causing bodily harm while impaired, and dangerous driving resulting in bodily harm. He is set to appear in court next month.

The highway was closed for several hours but has now reopened.

Federal Offender Arrested After Being At Large Since August

A federal offender who had been unlawfully at large since August has been apprehended in Simcoe.

The Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Squad reported that the man has been wanted since Aug. 12 and is serving nearly an eight-year sentence for four counts of sexual assault.

Two Drivers Charged With Impaired Driving

Two individuals are facing charges of impaired driving following separate incidents investigated by Norfolk County OPP.

Officers stopped one vehicle at 6:25 p. m. on Oct. 13 on Concession 6 Townsend just outside Waterford.

After conducting a roadside sobriety test, a 49-year-old male driver from Norfolk County was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, impaired driving, operating without insurance, failing to surrender insurance documents, driving without a permit, and using unauthorized plates on his vehicle.

This individual is due to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on Nov. 18.

The following day (Oct. 14), Norfolk County OPP responded to a report about a possible impaired driver on Queensway West in Simcoe.

Police later located the vehicle on Tisdale Street and arrested the driver after performing a roadside sobriety test.

A 54-year-old man from Norfolk County has been charged with impaired driving as well as having more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system while driving.

This accused person is scheduled for court appearance in Simcoe on Nov. 4.

Provincial police encourage anyone who sees someone they suspect may be impaired while driving to reach out to the OPP or their local police by calling 911.
