The Long Point Region Conservation Authority is prolonging a flood alert for all regions within its watershed.
In a news release issued on Monday afternoon, the LPRCA mentioned that water levels in streams throughout the authority “generally remain high and are running swiftly and, in most cases, are still running out of their banks and flooding low-lying areas.”
Most waterways seem to have peaked, said LPRCA spokesperson Paul Gagnon, but the lower sections of Big Creek are still on the rise.
In Tillsonburg, Big Otter Creek has now dropped by about 1.60 metres since its peak on Saturday night. The creek is nearly at bank-full capacity and flooding nearby low-lying areas.
Big Otter Creek in Vienna peaked on Sunday night and has decreased since then but remains very high and continues to flood low areas, according to Gagnon.
The LPRCA stated that flood coordinators should inform property owners in Vienna’s most vulnerable spots about the possible flooding risk.
People are advised to steer clear of ditches, streams, rivers, and ponds as the mix of slippery banks and cold, fast-moving water can be hazardous.
Parents should ensure that children and pets stay away from these locations.
Landowners are encouraged to check that dams, culverts, and catch basins are clear of debris and functioning correctly if it’s safe to do so.
The flood warning will stay active until noon on Friday. LPRCA staff will keep monitoring conditions in the watershed and provide updates as needed.
