Several Canadians took home Oscar awards

Canada is home to a lot of talented individuals.

If you caught the Academy Awards recently, you probably noticed how many times Canada was mentioned. Many people don’t realize just how significant our contribution is to both music and film. While it’s easy to think that everything comes from south of the border, the truth is they rely heavily on us.

The team that won for production design for Frankenstein, which was primarily filmed in Toronto, included Canadians Tamara Deverell from Montreal and Shane Vieau from Dartmouth. Also, Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey, both Canadian talents, took home the Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling for the same movie. Frankenstein was even nominated for best picture and had strong ties to Canada.

The Girl Who Cried Pearls won for best animated short and was led by Montreal animators. Alison Mc Alpine from Montreal earned a nomination for best documentary short with her work on Perfectly a Strangeness. The Vancouver branch of Industrial Light & Magic contributed significantly to Avatar: Fire and Ash. Maggie Kang’s KPop Demon Hunters won best animated feature.
We’ve long made our mark in acting, directing, producing films as well as contributing behind the scenes in creative roles like songwriting and set design to create award-winning projects.

I think we should celebrate our achievements a bit more often.

I woke up on St. Patrick’s Day to find another layer of snow covering everything along with blizzard conditions mixed with occasional sunshine in the morning. Everyone I spoke with asked me if it would ever end. Well, trust me when I say it will eventually stop. It’s still March after all, so there’s always a chance we’ll see more snow. We’ve had snow in May before and frost lasting into June; sunny warm days don’t usually arrive until much later in the year.

Things have been quite busy around my neighborhood lately. I’ve enjoyed watching a beautiful new home being built next door after the last one burned down last year. Across the street, a large renovation project has been taking place on an old two-bedroom bungalow during this time too. It’s fascinating to see it unfold even though some neighbors might complain about all the traffic caused by construction vehicles slowing things down as everyone stops to check out what’s happening. I believe when it’s all finished my Otterville area will look even better because of all this work being done. I hope I get invited over once both buildings are complete! My old house might seem out of place compared to them now but hey, history has its own charm.

In other news around the globe, I’m curious how families of those young girls and their teachers feel knowing that despite having access to top-notch military training along with advanced technology-the very best in history-they’re still relying on outdated information? How comforting is that?

Do you think “someone” will take credit if Venezuela wins big at the 2026 World Baseball Classic? Will it be linked somehow to their country’s “liberation”? Will they get an invite to celebrate at the White House? Or could this lead instead to more chaos or arrests?

Cuba could be next-maybe Greenland or even Canada?

This feels distant yet we’re all connected somehow-I’m just saying.
