A part of Highway 17 in northwestern Ontario was shut down for over 24 hours after a tragic accident that resulted in three fatalities.

As of around 7:30 a. m. ET on Friday, the Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation reported that the road had reopened.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stated that the crash occurred at about 3:30 a. m. ET on Thursday close to Raith, Ont. The highway between Shabaqua Corners and Ignace, which spans roughly 300 kilometres, was closed shortly after the incident.

Shabaqua Corners is situated approximately 65 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, Ont.

The three individuals who lost their lives in the accident were declared dead at the scene, according to police reports. OPP mentioned that their identities will not be disclosed “pending next-of-kin notification.”

OPP collision re-constructionists are also looking into what happened.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to reach out to them or Crime Stoppers.

The Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium canceled some school bus routes in Upsala because of the highway closure.
